Go To The Ant...

It's one of the most memorable Bible verses- "Go to the ant, thou sluggard and consider her ways." Perhaps as memorable for its implicit wisdom as its use of "sluggard". The message is "work hard to succeed". Seems sound, right?

So recently I spent some time watching ants. I've heard that humans are programmed for weather not climate and I think the same is true of ants. They only seem focused on what is in front to them. I isolated an ant on a raft in my pool and watched it wander endless, never going to the highest point to survey its situation. 

I do believe the ant is worthy of consideration but more as a cautionary tale. Hard work alone is worthless, it must accomplish something, have purpose. Too often I think we wander like the Ant, confusing activity for progress. An hour of reflection and focused thought can remove days from the journey. To evolve past this native animal state we must do something the ant can never do: stop.
